Community Spotlight

We’re excited to continue our Community Spotlight feature to showcase our students and instructors! We hope this will provide the opportunity for you to get to know your community members a little more in depth. This month please meet Edmund, Emile, and Edgar Roman and Cory Shim.

Name: Edmund Roman
Age: 7 years old
Instrument: Piano

· How old were you when you started your musical journey?
Edmund started playing at 5.

· Do you have a favorite song? If so, what is it?
His favorite song is “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons.

· What else do you like to do in your free time?
Edmund loves swimming, and he practices music every day.

Name: Emile Roman
Age: 7 years old
Instrument: Piano

· How old were you when you started your musical journey?
Emile started playing at 5.

· Do you have a favorite song? If so, what is it?
His favorite song is “Believer” by Imagine Dragons.

· What else do you like to do in your free time?
Emile likes to play computer games, and he practices music every day because mom makes him.

Name: Edgar Roman
Age: 10 years old
Instrument: Piano

· How old were you when you started your musical journey?
Edgar started playing at 5.

· Who is your favorite composer?
Edgar’s favorite composer is Beethoven.

· What else do you like to do in your free time?
Edgar likes to play Minecraft. He is inspired to practice because he loves Godzilla movies and he searches YouTube to find notes to practice the Godzilla theme :)

Name: Cory Shim
Age: 22
Instrument: Piano

I started playing piano in high school when I was 14 (2013). Since then, I've gotten a Bachelor's of Music in piano performance and started my Master's in it at UMD College Park.

· What do you like most about playing music?
A lot of things, but nothing compares to the satisfaction you experience from all the hard work you've done in practice coming together in a really great performance. That or just how beautiful, exciting, and lively the storytelling in a lot of music is and how you get to experience that both as a listener and performer.

· Who is your favorite composer?
I don't have one definite favorite composer but a few composers I'm really enjoying listening to lately are Brahms, Debussy, and Chopin. Though a lot of it comes from the fact I'm working on pieces from all of them, even more of my enjoyment comes from just how good they were at their craft in their own way. As of now, I don't think you can get any better than those three in my book but maybe that will change once I start working on some Beethoven or Scriabin or whoever.

· What inspires you to practice?
Figuring out the story and/or colors of a piece. It's awesome discovering the world a composer creates for others in each piece.
